Prevention | Speakers Bureau

Colorado AIDS Project works in the community with individuals, groups and organizations to provide up to date information, resources, condoms and training to increase knowledge and awareness of HIV, testing services and treatments available. Our aim is to enable people to make informed choices regarding their own sexual health as part of our mission to prevent HIV infection and improve the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS. Our primary programs are AIDS 101 and Positive Speakers Bureau.

AIDS 101

The Marketing and Prevention Department offers classes taught by professional staff. This class, ”AIDS 101” provides a basic overview about what HIV/AIDS is, HIV testing,  and how to prevent the spread of the virus.  Tailored presentations cover an array of topics including HIV transmission and prevention, psychosocial issues of living with HIV, treatment options and epidemiology. Presentations may be presented alone or with a Positive Speaker.

Positive Speakers Bureau

CAP offers presentations by trained volunteer public speakers who are living with HIV.  Positive speakers are a group of people living with HIV who have an interest in educating people about HIV from a personal perspective.

Positive Speakers provide the following benefits:

  • Offers schools, colleges, professionals and community groups the opportunity to hear first hand accounts of the personal experiences of people living with HIV.
  • Encourages understanding, dispel myths and counter ignorance, fear and discrimination by representing themselves as they are.
  • Powerfully reinforces health promotion messages enabling people to encounter someone with HIV, rather that seeing HIV as something that happens to other people outside of, and alien to their experience.
  • Enables health and social care professionals to have a better understanding of the subjective experience of HIV which we believe can enhance their practice.
  • Provides peer education and support to other people living with HIV on living well.

All services are free of charge.
